The existence of large quantities of still untreated special waste is a health and environmental threat in a number of countries.
Stocks of outdated pesticides are the focus of major programs coordinated by the United Nations' World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Pesticide waste contains persistent organic pollutants and is a particular problem in Africa, the Middle East and former Soviet-block countries. Ukraine, which has to manage an estimated stock of 20,000 to 25,000 metric tons of pesticides, hired Veolia Environmental Services through a tender calling for the total elimination of nearly 1,000 metric tons.
This first contract positions the division for subsequent phases of the Ukrainian Environment Ministry's program.
