France's Mission Interministérielle sur le Démantèlement des Navires (MIDN) estimates that the number of "state-owned" ships to be dismantled in Europe over the next 10 years at about 30, or roughly 300,000 to 500,000 metric tons. The figure for merchant vessels over 100 GRT (gross registered tonnage) is thought to be about 200 to 250 in Europe and about 700 worldwide. This figure is expected to rise sharply with the upcoming ban on single-hull oil tankers.
