RDFs, a source of energy, are not subject to the price volatility of fossil fuels and are eligible for various incentive plans, such as green certificates in Italy and Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) in the United Kingdom. RDFs also help to:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Burning of the so-called "biogenic" fraction of RDF, rich in organic carbon, has a neutral impact on climate change. In addition, when RDFs are produced from municipal waste, an RDF fraction often comes from mechanical-biological treatment units, a method that eliminates GHG emissions.
- Preserve natural resources. Indeed, waste treatment facilities designed to produce fuels do an excellent job of recovering recyclable materials.
