The Arc-en-Ciel high-performance sorting center employs 12 optical sorting processes, or automated machines that identify each object's light spectrum and control its ejection by means of compressed air nozzles. An optical sorting process can extract up to 4,700 objects a minute.
The waste-to-energy plant has a treatment capacity of 225,000 metric tons of waste a year. The facility is linked to the city's heating network; it supplies heat and electricity to homes as well as public, private and commercial buildings.
Veolia Environmental Services France's hazardous waste management (SARP Industries) has designed the first second-generation French plant producing biodiesel from used cooking oil and greasy waste. Commissioned in 2010, it will eventually be able to convert 40,000 metric tons of very heterogeneous waste oil into biofuel each year.
The Rostock plastic waste recycling plant collects and recycles 500 million used plastic bottles a year, which enable the production of new bottles, saving 28,000 metric tons of oil.
